Studying a Bachelor Degree in Game Art, hopefully learning the skills to design model and texture characters in a game ready fashion, and how not to chronically abuse 3d studio max i have decided to compile a journal of my day to day workings...

Pixel Patience

I was anxiously awaiting texturing, as this is something i could see my self pursuing in the industry but was unsure how i would fare. And as it turned out i dont think i did too badly, there are however some errors which i havent had time to rectify due to the approaching deadline but may get round to over the weekend. It's been two weeks since my last post and i reckon the largest proportion has been spent solely on colouring pixels and image overlaying.

We started off setting up the render in photoshop, added a nice blue background, a black outline fill of the render for ease on the eyes and locked the layers to prevent any accidental alterations. For the rest of the details i tried to create a new layer for each, only because from past experience it can make life easier in the long run. However at one point the number of layers became absurd and photoshop just ate my ram in one big chomp, so i had to downgrade to some bigger, slower ram and it seemed to do the trick.

Once i got into the swing of texturing i found it fairly straight forward, at least more so than unwrapping, it just require alot of my time and patience. I began blocking out the main peices of body with single colours to get a feel for what was right. Then later added texture images of metal, peeling paint etc; and overlayed them with various opacity and fill settings till it gave a good look. It was mostly trial and error, and so much ctrl+alt+z that my fingers began to stiffen up into a kind of claw.

Then came the weather like a thunderstorm, i decided that being an aircraft from the world war era that i would rust and dirty it up, alot. Also this proved handy in some parts where there was obvious faults in my model and unwrap that i was only able to work around, the worst being around the tail fin.

I created the elusive eel logo using a font from dafont found here

I stumbled upon some good grunge, spatter and textured brushes which i used for the grunge and rust layers. I admit that i got a little carried away and overdid it, which i then had to waste a couple of hours to tone back down the mustang, and in my opinion it looked better before i went overboard.
